What we do with wood

Wood of any kind is just an amazing material, throughout history the vast majority of cultures have used wood heavily for many purposes, these include; Building materials, tools, eating utensils, furniture, decorations, and with a strange irony being such a fundamentally important material it has also kept us warm when burnt.

Despite the vast array of materials available in this modern world, wood isn't really going anywhere, for example, as I write this; I am sat in a wooden chair at a wooden desk typing this, beneath my feet are wooden floorboards and in the next room a wood burning stove churning heat out. The point to all this is, that i am not unique in being a fan of wood, the stuff is everywhere, yet often taken for granted and not really appreciated.

When we work with wood here, we don't look in the racks for planed square edged timber, with clear vertical grain structure, as whilst for structural timber that is great, it isn't the most interesting and more importantly it doesn't tell a hugely exciting story. When we shop for wood, we look for an interesting knot, highly unique grain structure and if possible any other inclusions which add to its charm and character.

The one thing we love even more than the above, it wood which has been used, we buy reclaimed wood from; Old buildings, Railways, shipping and many other locations. This wood will always to my mind be the most exciting, however sadly we can't often get a repeatable supply of it, therefore it will generally be used for limited production items or even one off collections.

The best thing about working with wood, there is no waste!
Off-cuts, well they make lovely kindling for the fire.
Sawdust, that is ideal for drying up the sludge my wife's ducks and chickens like to create.
When I think about the controversy surrounding excessive manufacturing waste, it makes me wonder 'What could be a better than wood?'.
